ADVANCED COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

CLC 4340/5301 Classical Mythology, Dr. Paolo Asso. 3:00-3:50 pm, MWF

In this course we will study ancient Greek and Roman myths and also their representations in western art. Our exploration of the ancient literary genres will range from epic to drama and will include historiography, philosophy, and scholarly prose. Following Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the emphasis will be on three Greek sagas: a. the Argo voyage with Jason and Medea, b. the Theban stories with Oedipus and Antigone, and c. the Trojan cycle, which will eventually lead us to Roman myth. Our eclectic theoretical approach will include French structuralism, gender & sexuality, ancient & modern rationalism(s), and psychoanalysis.

CLG 3325/5302 Greek Historians: Herodotus, Dr. David Sweet. 2:00-3:20 pm, TR

Herodotus is not generally understood to be a philosophical historian, but he is.  He has a compelling account of the principles of historical action, and this course will examine those principles.  We will read selections especially from the first four books, including substantial portions of Book I, Book II.2-3 (the experiment of Psammetichus), Book III.80-87 (the conspirators’ debate about the three political regimes), and some other passages as time permits.

CLG 3V50/5301 Greek Poetry, Dr. Teresa Danze. 2:00-2:50 pm, MWF

In this course, we will read selections of poetry from various Archaic and Classical writers, including but not limited to Archilochus, Sappho, Solon and Pindar. To conclude the semester, we will look at the choral odes of Aeschylus and Sophocles.

CLL 3V50-01/5301 Seneca, Dr. Teresa Danze. 4:00-5:20 pm, MWF

We will read portions of one of Seneca's philosophical essays - De Ira - along with one of his tragedies - the Thyestes. We will also read several of his tragedies in English.

CLL 3V50-02/5302 Lucan, Dr. Paolo Asso. 5:30-6:50 pm, MW

Lucan’s epic invites us to ask not only what civil war is for a Roman, but also what it means to be Roman and how different constructions of Roman identity are relevant for our own understanding of Roman epic. We will read Lucan’s Civil War in the translation by Matthew Fox (Penguin, 2012), with substantial excerpts to be studied in Latin (ideally, no fewer than two thousand Latin hexameters). In addition, we will read from Statius, Silvae 2.7, a consolatory poem dedicated to Lucan’s widow on the occasion of Lucan’s birthday.
