Classics Department Award

The Classics Department Award

  1. Amounts: $1,000 – $5,000
  2. Eligibility: High school seniors and transfer students who have applied to UD and have an interest in studying classics.

Application Deadline: December 1

The competition includes a one-hour translation test (from either Greek or Latin) and an interview with the Classics Department faculty, which must be scheduled by December 15th.  We encourage you to schedule the exam and interview during the fall Odyssey Days program, because that way you can meet other future UD students visiting at the same time.  If this is impossible, you may schedule a Personal Visit at any time until the deadline by contacting the Campus Visit Coordinator, Ms. Katie Crnkovich (krcrnkovich@udallas.edu).

To Apply:

  1. Apply for admission to the university.
  2. Submit a letter of recommendation from your high school or college Latin teacher, and
  3. Schedule an on-campus interview with the Classics Department by contacting the campus visit coordinator (krcrnkovich@udallas.edu).
  4. Complete the Special Award Program Application and submit it prior to your campus visit and interview. Please be sure to mark the envelope or fax “Special Award Program Application.”

Renewability Criteria:

This scholarship is renewable annually and is available to you during four consecutive school years, dependent upon your academic performance and the criteria stated below.

  1. Maintain full-time academic status each semester by earning at least twelve UD credit hours each fall and spring semester, and at least twenty-seven UD credit hours per annual review period.
  2. Demonstrate a cumulative UD G.P.A. (grade point average) of at least 3.000 on the annual review date.
  3. Complete three advanced courses within the Classics Department beyond the required language Core. Exceptions to this are possible, especially if a scholar elects to study Greek and must start at the elementary level. The exact number of required courses will depend on the student’s placement in Latin and/or Greek upon arrival and will be determined by the Chairman of the Department of Classics, Dr. David Sweet, who may be contacted at dsweet@udallas.edu.  Courses taken beyond the Core may count as electives.
  4. Begin Classics courses during the first semester of your freshman year, and take at least one course each semester in which you are at the Irving campus, until the minimum is reached.
  5. Meet with the Classics Advisor each semester for approval of your course schedule until you have achieved the minimum course completion requirement.
